Volunteer Opportunities
Summer SLICE: Opportunities for Teens
 Many young teens in early June spent their time watching TV, hanging out at the mall or getting ready for camp. For ten members of the St. Louis Jewish community, ages 12 through 15, they spent their days learning about the community of Kinloch and helping to run a camp for children.
SLICE, St. Louis Interfaith Community Explorations, is a community service program for teens sponsored by Faith Beyond Walls, a program of the Interfaith Partnership. Participation by Jewish youth was coordinated by the JCRC’s Bohm Social Justice Initiative. Now in its 3rd year, SLICE starts the week with an interactive Poverty Simulation where participants learn about the struggles of poverty including housing, food, childcare and transportation needs. SLICE activities take place in different underserved areas of St. Louis where the emphasis is usually on community clean-ups. The Jewish youth who partnered with 50 teens from four other religious communities during early June were also able to help run a camp for neighborhood children.
 “I thought we’d be watching the kids, I didn’t realize we would actually be playing with the kids and helping to run the camp,” stated 15 year old Mitchell Kramer. He went on to add, “It was a lot of fun and I hope I can do this again next year. “ 12 year old Hava Kane shared, “Even though the people don’t have a lot, I can tell that they are a community and really take care of one another.”
The Jewish youth got to learn about the history of Kinloch and meet Mayor Keith Conway and Felicia Pulliam-Jones, the Director of Community Development. In Kinloch. Lunch each day was served at the neighborhood café where the participants got to debrief the experience each day with Faith Beyond Walls staff and over 50 other teen volunteers from throughout St. Louis and as far away as Boulder, Colorado.
