Poverty Initiative
The JCRC Poverty Initiative was an outgrowth of the JCPA’s (Jewish Council on Public Affairs) initiative to protect, preserve, and promote a just American society, one that is democratic and pluralistic. This includes support of policies and programs that help move individuals and families out of poverty and enable them to sustain a minimally adequate decent standard of living.

We are continuing to focus on lead poisoning and have added the issue of combating hunger.

Combating Hunger
Jewish liturgy reminds us that often, “The poor person’s wisdom is despised and words are not heard” (Kohelet, Ecclesiastes 9:16). Despite the fact that there are more than 35 million Americans living below the poverty line and millions more hovering above it, we all too often close our eyes and ears to their plight.  We are obligated to care for those who are unable to care for themselves.  Hunger must not be tolerated in a land such as ours where food is abundant and there is enough for all.
